Life Events - Getting Married

The wedding bells have stopped ringing and now it’s time for the logistics. Beyond deciding where to live and whose couch to keep, getting married requires a number of important financial decisions. Planning early on in your relationship will help ensure that you future together is as bright as the day you said, “I do.”

Things To Consider

Saving: At the least, your family size just doubled. Be prepared for things to come by opening a regular or high-yield savings account. You can also look into retirement saving options because it’s never too early or late to start saving for your golden years.

Changing Your Name: Once you visit the DMV and the Social Security Office to switch to your new name, come establish it at the credit union. Visit a branch with your new ID or marriage license and fill out the required forms.

Adding A Name To Your Accounts: Talk to your new spouse about how you wish to handle your accounts. From joint checking and savings, to shared checking but individual savings, to completely separate accounts, there is a solution that is right for you. If you choose joint accounts, simply visit your local branch to add your new co-owner.

Reorder Checks: If you’ve added your spouse to your checking account, you’ll need to order new checks to reflect the change, which you can do online here.
