San Francisco Federal Credit Union Certificate Account FAQ

A share certificate — or savings certificate — is a type of savings account that credit unions offer. It allows you to earn a higher rate than other types of savings accounts in exchange for leaving your money in the account for a specific length of time or term. Share certificates earn guaranteed returns, and the term can be a few months to several years. There is a penalty for early withdrawals before the maturity date, however, which consists of a portion of the dividends earned.

Credit union share certificates and savings accounts both earn dividends, however, they differ in how they work and their flexibility. Share certificates require you to deposit a fixed amount of money for a fixed term in exchange for a higher interest rate. In comparison, savings accounts typically have lower rates and allow you to make up to six withdrawals or transfers per month per federal regulations.

An IRA share certificate is a share certificate that is held within an IRA to grow your retirement savings. It combines the tax advantages of a Traditional or Roth IRA with the dividend earnings potential of a share certificate.

Yes, our share certificates are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for up to $250,000.

The minimum balance for a share certificate or IRA certificate is $1,000.

Yes, our Standard Savings Account is insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for up to $250,000.

Credit union certificates have fixed interest rates. The rate is locked in when you open an account and won’t change during the term.

When you open a share certificate with us, you will have the opportunity to make arrangements for the money at the maturity date. If you do not make arrangements then, there is a 10-day grace period where you can roll over your balance to a new certificate, add funds to the account, or reduce the balance. You can also transfer the money to a different account or close the account without penalty.

If you want to roll over your balance to a new share certificate, please contact us for the latest dividend rates and annual percentage yield (APY) and to discuss term options. We can be reached during regular business hours at 415-775-5377.
